GTF’s statement on Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne Passing

Monday, July 29, 2024

The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) is saddened by the passing of Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne and would like to extend its condolences to his family and all those who were fortunate to have crossed path with him.

Dr. Karunaratne had exceptional academic achievements - including a Ph.D. in engineering from Cambridge and an academic position in Peradeniya. But it was the plight of the society and the wellbeing of the ordinary working people that was the driving force for his principled life and political career.

His voice was unique coming from the South in supporting the Tamil people in their struggle for recognition and equality. He always supported Tamil peoples right to self determination in Sri Lanka and never wavered on this or in any other principle he passionately believed in and worked on. It was pleasing for us to know that he expressed his support for the dialogue between sections of Tamil diaspora and Buddhist monks from the initial stages.

The scope is limited for such principled people in the Sri Lankan society and for his principled positions Dr. Karunaratne faced many challenges and threats throughout his life. It is perhaps fitting that so much is written about him in the Tamil media after his passing.

One feels good that Sri Lanka produced such people of intellect, principles and character in significant numbers. It is sad at the same time that many of them are passing on while the country is still struggling to make meaningful progress that will match their ideals and efforts.

GTF is of the view that the stories of people like Dr. Karunaratne must be told loud and clear, as it is them that can provide true inspiration to the next generation of principled leaders and activists. Only that could be considered a fitting legacy for such principled giants.
