India is respectful of Sri Lanka’s sovereignity

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Complementing the Sri Lankan President on the two elections in the country, Modi said this revealed the deep rooted democratic traditions and the faith that the people of Sri Lanka had in the democracy.

“A Mediterranean warmth with traditional friend Cypus”.

The resolution, which aims to foster reconciliation and improve human rights and accountability of the nation, was tabled in the United Nations Human Rights council on Thursday. “As far as India is concerned, we naturally support the quest for justice”. He added that a way could be found for a consensus between Colombo and the UNHRC.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister said more German companies should invest in Sri Lanka and take advantage of the islands skilled labour force and regional ties, during the visit of his German counterpart.

“This report is being presented in a new political context in Sri Lanka, which offers grounds for hope”, he continued.

The London-based Tamil Diaspora organization, the Global Tamil Forum (GTF), has said that “heinous crimes of both sides” in the Sri Lankan conflict, should be investigated.

Sirisena also held discussions with the Switzerland President Simonetta Sommaruga.

The Sri Lankan government’s decision to join as a co-sponsor paves the way for all of us to work together to deliver the commitments reflected in the resolution. It is true that the United States representatives saw the changes in Sri Lanka after January 8, and were ready to express satisfaction at the steps taken towards good governance and reconciliation, with the promise of more in the future. That would be a contribution to sustainability.

“We realize how important this is to prevent impunity not only for violations of human rights but for corruption and other crimes”, the minister said.

Sri Lanka’s criminal justice system, says the report, is not adequately equipped to deal with the violations, as it lacks a reliable system for victim and witness protection and has been corrupted by decades of emergency, conflict and impunity.

The former President also drew concerns over ‘operational paragraph 8′ which encourages the Government to remove from office military officers suspected of having violated human rights through a vetting process (even if there is no evidence to prosecute them). Tobgay said that it was an anomaly that India was not a permanent member of the Council.
